The Reception of Cold Mountain's Poetry in the Far East and the United States

                                                                                                        Ling Chung

                                              When men see Han Shan

                                               They all say he's crazy

And not much to look at---

                                               Dressed in rags and hides.

They don't get what I say

And I don't talk their language.

All I can say to those I meet:

"Try and make it to Cold Mountain."

---Han Shan, translated by Gary Snyder

                                              时人见寒山,各谓是风颠。

                                              貌不起人目,身为布裘缠。

                                              我语他不会,他语我不言。

                                              为报往来者,可来向寒山。

Han Shan, or Cold Mountain寒山, has been a puzzling literary figure. The reception, and in some sense, the rediscoveries of his poetry probably fare well among the most phenomenal literary cases. In his native land ---China---he was not even considered a minor poet prior to the eighteenth century. Not until the 1970’s was his reputation as a poet firmly established in Taiwan. Yet in the classical periods, he was deified by some Chinese religious sects as the reincarnation of a bodhisattva, or of a Taoist immortal. Surprisingly, his fortune as a poet fares much more impressively abroad. For centuries the Japanese honored him as a major Chinese poet. In spite of the great cultural divergence of the East and the West, he suddenly turned into an ideal hero of the Beat Generation of the United States in the late 1950’s.
