A DRAFT DESCRIPTION AND FRIENDLY CRITIQUE BY A CHINESE USER OF THE CHINESE COMPARATIVE LITERATURE ASSOCIATION’S NEW WEBSITE (www. cclaa.org)
The impressively large Chinese website, www.cclaa.org, made in the PRC, is filled with much valuable information on Comparative Literature resources from China, Chinese-speaking countries, and western countries. News of the latest academic achievements, activities, and published articles can be found by just clicking on Academic News, Academic Works and Classical Topics. Scholars can also exchange ideas and research projects via the Message Board.
Scholars, junior and senior, are able to get into the field of Comparative Literature from the resources mentioned above. In addition, they can learn about individual comparatists from the Profiles of Scholars section, and take further steps in Comparative Literature by exploring the publications recommended and introduced in considerable detail.
If people have problems with foreign languages or translations, Online Translation Assistant provides access to 23 online language dictionaries. Users can connect, for example, with the Cambridge Online Dictionary or the Britannica Online Encyclopedia to solve their problems. Or they can just use the translation service created by the CCLAA. CCLAA provides an instant online translating service into English, Japanese, Russian, and German, etc. It only takes seconds to finish translating. Type in or copy the text that needs to be translated, choose the source and target language, and click on, “Go.”
References to important articles, books, and dissertations are not merely by giving simple titles, but also include the table of contents and abstracts. Furthermore, CCLAA has organized their resources for users to call up by typing keywords in the “Search” box and choosing topics from the “Search” pull-down menu. Another thoughtful design feature is the ease with which one can enlarge or minimize the size of Chinese characters and English letters in every article.
However, because there is such a plethora of abundant resources crowded onto each web page, aesthetically speaking, the pages look cramped and cluttered. Viewers, who go to the website for the first time, may easily lose direction and become discouraged in trying to locate what they are looking for. For example, on the homepage, there are many enticing buttons one can click on, such as New News, New Hots, Specials, Statistics, Search, Investigate, Member Log-in, and several recommended articles from the columns of Academic Works, Academic News, Classical Topics, etc. But it takes a long time to know how to start browsing. Viewers may eventually find what their need, but only after being side-tracked or coming to a dead-end several times. Some users may not want to take such detours and give up trying to find what they want. Moreover, it is hard to figure out what is exactly included under these various topics listed on the homepage.
Website viewers prefer to have more control when they surf the Internet rather than lose control because of an over-abundance of information and resources which distract and confuse. Rather than having too many options to choose from I suggest that viewers be given a clear idea of the CCLAA committee (e.g., name, logo, address, and so forth) as soon as they open the website. After users get into the homepage, then, there should be given one or two important pieces of information (e.g., the latest news). Let users know what your website contains, little by little. Information overload causes mental indigestion. Leave more space and put key words or topics in clear and bold type as well as a few different type sizes and fonts. Thus, users will more easily notice what is of relevant importance. It would also be good to give a brief phrase indication of what is contained under each button when the mouse moves over it.
The website is mainly separated into the key eight topics; however, there is a problem in placing first reference to the eight topics, sandwiched between two large web graphics of the top of the first page. Because the letters of the Eight Topics are so small, some viewers may miss or, inadvertently, skip over them when they scroll down the page and, instead, click on other attractive items recommended below. Later, when they scroll back toward the top, the user may think the lower graphic is really the beginning of the page and neglect the important Eight Topic entry above the graphic. It would be better to move the main Eight Topic entry below the graphics and enlarge the size and shape of the letters in order to immediately attract viewers’ attention to these eight signposts.
……
Despite these shortcomings, the website remains a remarkable achievement. I hope these suggestions will encourage the CCLAA staff to improve it even more. The one-page English summary description is a very useful addition, especially in assisting comparatists with little or no command of Chinese to learn about China’s impressive achievements. The more English that can be included, the better known will this valuable website be to the worldwide community of scholars.
